ROGHUDI
The suburb of Roghudi is located in the
interior of the Aspromonte National Park
in the Grecanica area of Calabria.
History
The centre has ancient origins and for a long time, was part
of the Grecanica language community of Calabria. Its name
in dialect, Grecanico, signifies rocky, referring to the mountainous
isolation surrounding it.
A terrible earthquake in 1783 seriously damaged the suburb
of Roghudi.
The suburb was abandoned during the ‘70s of the XX century,
as it was condemned following landslides and floods.
A visit to the City
Roghudi is sadly now a ghost town. The inhabitants have
transferred to new coastal districts near to Melito in Porto
Salvo.
The visit is therefore rich with suggestion and imbued with
particular fascination.
