PALMI
Palmi is a locality along the Tyrrhenian
coast of Calabria, situated on a terrace in the valley
of the Sant’Elia mountains.
History
Palmi was founded by the inhabitants of Taurianum, in escape
from the Saracens. Its name derives from the great presence
of palm trees on its territory.
Draught Rais, the pirate, besieged, plundered and destroyed
it (1549), but Carlo Spinelli, Duke of Seminara, had it reconstructed,
named it Carlopoli and reinforced its defensive wall structure
with coastal towers (1565).
It then assumed importance through the Spinelli family with
the Bourbons, who made it a district capital (1816).
Palmi was frequently destroyed by terrible earthquakes (1783,
1898, 1908), but always reconstructed.
A visit to the City
Palmi allows pleasant seaside holidays but also gives the
possibility of excursions to Monte Sant’Elia and the
neighbouring Aspromonte National Park.
The City has a modern look following repeated reconstruction
work carried out after seismic events. One must visit the
Cathedral containing a wooden statue in its interior, the
Immaculate Conception Church and the museum pole of the Casa
della Cultura, which holds the Ethnographic Museum, the Modern
Art Gallery, the Guerrisi Museum, the Communal Library and
the Museum of Antiquities.
The Varia Festival is highly celebrated yearly on 16th August.
