CIVITANOVAMARCHE
On the north side of the river
Cluentum's mouth (Chienti) rises Civitanova Marches,
city with two aspects that has always owned two city centers:
the first on the hill, Civitanova alta, founded in the 50
d.C with the name of Cluentis Vicus, the
second on the sea founded in VIII the century a.C with the
name of Cluana and already known by ancient
Greeks as an important adriatic port for their commerical
trades.
During the barbaric invasions Cluana was
plundered and destroyed by Visigoti while the population took
refuge in the Vicus. The following history is common to all
the centers of the Marche region and it sees the belongings
to the Longobard reign, to the French Empire then and the
alternation of the power to the powerful families in the Middle
Ages and the Renaissance: De Varano, Malatesta, Sforza, Visconti,
Cesarini and between these actors like always the Church of
Rome.
In Civitanova alta there're several cultural spots along the
alleys of the medieval village: the Collegiata di
S.Paolo Apostolo, Palazzo Ducale
belonged to the Cesarini, the church of the Santissimo Sacramento
and Porta Marina (1442) or Sant'Angelo Door with its characteristic
cypress on the tower.
We cannot remember the holiday tourist vocation of the part
on the sea of Civitanova that offers equipped beach and a
more modern face embellished by the presence of some Liberty
villas on the promenade.
