NOEPOLI
Noepoli is an ancient Lucano centre situated
in a panoramic position in the Sarmento Valley in the interior
of a marvellous natural oasis, namely the Pollino National
Park.
History
It was a Lucani and Enotri centre from the VIII to the IV
century BC.
During the Medieval period, it took on the name of Noia and
became a centre for preaching by Greek Basilian Monks.
With the advent of the Normans during the XI century, Noepoli
became a Lordship of Count Alessandro of Chiaromonte, as testified
in a document which ratifies his donation from the S. Onofrio
Monastery to the Cersosimo Church (1093).
During 1404 it became an autonomous fief, but under the Aragonese
it passed to the Del Balzo family and then to the Princes
of Sanseverino of Salerno (XV century).
During 1863 the village took on its present day name of Noepoli.
A visit to the City
A circular tower is all that remains of the ancient feudal
castle which lies on the place of the ancient Lucani city
(VI century BC). Its finds are exhibited in the National Archaeological
Museum in Siritide Policoro.
The Parish of Noepoli preserves frescoes from the ‘300s,
a wooden crucifix and a baptismal font from the XV century
in its interior.
In the lower part of the village, the Madonna del Rosario
Chapel is also interesting. It preserves a wooden crucifix.
Not too far outside the village, one can also visit the Madonna
of Constantinople Chapel (XV century.
Its position in the interior of the Pollino Park allows visitors
naturalistic walks and excursion.
