SCANNO
Mentioned for the first time
in 1067 in a donation act of the Monastery
di S.Pietro in Lago in Montecassino, Scanno demonstrates a
more ancient origins through the finding in the territory
of Roman rests and others dating back to the bronze age.
Passed under the dominion of Longobards and
annexed to the ducato of Spoleto, Scanno remained under the
Spoleto's influence also with the advent of the reign of Franchi
(774). In the Middle Ages it endured destructions due to seismic
events and guelfi mercenaries to the service of Pope
in the sphere of the fight between the Roman Church of Gregorio
IX and Svevian Empire leaded by Federico II.
Scanno was protagonist of the transumanza activity
(sheeps' migration) mainly basing on that its economy during
centuries XVII-XVIII-XIX.
The visit to Scanno dips in an unique and intact atmosphere
offering characteristic starting points through its arches
(Porta della Croce and the Arch of Sant'Eustachio)
and its Fountains (Fontana “Sarracco”,
XVI cent.), loggias of the palaces with mullioned windows
(Colarossi House) and “cemmàuse”,
external stair passing under the arches (cemmàusa of
the Nocella).
In Scanno moreover it can be visited the church of S.Maria
di Costantinopoli with a beautiful fresco representing
Madonna in throne and Sant'Eustachio
and Santa Maria di Loreto (Sec. XII), cathedral of the city.
The secular architecture finds instead its maximum expression
in the noble palaces (Palazzo Mosca, Palazzo
Di Rienzo).
