PENNE
Ancient center of the population
of the Vestini, which at first sided against
Rome with the Sannitic
wars and later formed an alliance with it in 304 a.C becoming
subsequently an important thermal station.
The history then follows that common to all the villages of
Central Italy with the fall of Rome, the successive barbaric
invasions and the phenomenon of the incastellamento
(forming castles).
Of this ancient history remain only archaeological findings
while present Penne strongly declares a medieval
print with the presence of the brick, tightened alleys and
porticos.
In X sec. Penne became county and remained faithful to the
Aragoneses. It passed therefore to the Medici
family. In 1522 Carl V gave it in dowry to
Margherita of Austria who married a Farnese,
passed subsequently under the dominion of the Borboni and
the Reign of Naples.
To be visited in Penne the Duomo, that keeps
a precious altar dating back to the XII the century and an
acquasantiera (holy water recipient, 1400). The Church
of S. Nicola, adjacent to the tower of the ancient town-walls.
The Church of S. Agostino, in Romanesque style with baroque
finishes.
Among the civil palaces we report: Palazzo
Castiglione, Palace of the Bono-Pilotta, with baroque portal
and paintings (XVII cent.), Palazzo Castiglione De Leone (XVII
century).
