MUSEUMS
IN MESSINA
Museo Regionale (Regional
Museum):
exists since 1914 and can be located at the end of Viale della
Libertà. It conserves sculptures, decorations and architectonic
elements which were recovered after the disastrous earthquake
of 1908. The new seat is still in phase of construction and
can be found next to the actual one; which will then in turn
be transformed into a congress centre. The eras covered by
the finds go from the 12th to the 15th Century. A room, the
4th, is dedicated to the great Renaissance artist Antonello
da Messina (amongst which there’s an important polyptych
example exhibited) and other artists in the same circle and
examples of Flemish art. The paintings cover a vast era and
arrive at the end of the 18th Century. Another fundamental
room is the 10th which conserves two works by Caravaggio (Resurrection
of Lazarus and the Adoration of the Shepherds), painted by
the artist during his stay in Messina whilst on his escape
journey.
