SIENA
The magnificent Spedale (Hospital)
of S. Maria della Scala, also faces onto the square, and is
rich in frescoes and old rooms (13th-14th Centuries), which
today, have become an exceptional exhibition centre.
Amongst the other churches of Siena, all rich in works of
extraordinary importance, we cannot forget: S. Maria dei Servi
(from the 13th Century to 1526), S. Francesco (1326-1475),
S. Domenico (1226-1445), and the Oratory of S. Bernardino
(15th Century).
Regarding the main museums, we must also remember the National
Archaeological Museum and the wonderfully rich National Art
Gallery.
The “Fonti” (fountains) that decorated the City
are also famous, including the Fonte Branda, at the foot of
the City, dating back to 1246 and the Fonte Gaia by Iacopo
della Quercia (1419), with a copy that still adorns the Piazza
del Campo.
