PISA
An itinerary of Pisa, other
then including a walk along the banks of the Arno (the Lungarni)
on which it faces, and in different areas, the Church of S.
Maria della Spina (a small Gothic jewel of 1323) and the Palazzo
de’Medici (now the Seat of the Prefecture), should be
experienced by keeping to the narrow and sometimes tortuous
medieval roads – for example, the Borgo Stretto –
to savour the most characteristic aspects of the City and
to gradually discover, other important monuments: the 13th
Century Church of S. Francesco, the Piazza dei Cavalieri (Horsemen
Square), that is, the old centre of the Republic City, dominated
by the Palazzo dei Cavalieri, dating back to 1569 and today,
representative seat of the Scuola Normale Superiore; the medieval
Via Corsica or the 16th Century Via S. Maria.
The most important museum collections in Pisa can be found
in the National Museum in the ex Convent of S. Matteo –
collections of sculpture and paintings from the Tuscany School
of art – and in the Museo delle Sinopie (in Piazza Duomo)
– with a seat in the old building of the Hospital of
Misericordia (Charity Hospital) gathering together an interesting
collection of all the great preparatory designs (the Sinopie,
record) of the frescoes of Camposanto, which were ruined in
the fire following the bombardments of ’44 and saved
during the course of the restoration campaign.
