MUSEUMS
IN LUCCA
Museo della Cattedrale
(Cathedral Museum):
can be found beside the Church of San Martino in Piazza
Antelminelli. The architecture is an articulate complex
of mediaeval origin, to which a 13th Century Tower connects
as well as a Renaissance Oratory. The collection is in chronological
order and contains works originating from the Cathedral,
the old City Cathedral and the Church of Saints Giovanni
and Reparata. Precious illuminated choral parchments can
be seen here, as well as Renaissance works, liturgical furnishings
and sculptures.
Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Mansi (National Museum
of Palazzo Mansi):
faces onto Via Galli-Tassi. The Palazzo consists of a nucleus
constructed between the end of the 16th Century and the
beginning of the 17th Century, but also contains more ancient
structures. There are additions from the 19th Century. The
museum has been hosted here since 1977. The paintings conserved
in the Art Gallery Section – all the Palazzo can be
visited to view the rooms and living furnished living areas
which belonged to the Mansi Family – are chronologically
connected between the 16th and the 18th Century and number
works by Bronzino, Tintoretto and Vasari. There are also
Flemish tapestries conserved here.
Museo Nazionale
di Villa Guinigi (National Museum of Villa Guinigi):
can be found just outside the City walls. It’s an
imposing construction from 1413, erected on the wishes of
the Lord of Lucca. In 1924, it became the seat of the Civic
Museum and in 1968, that of the National. The collections
are very articulate, but have a common factor of collecting
works from Lucca or produced for Lucca and its rural areas.
The exposition is divided into sections: archaeological
– medieval – from the 13th-14th Century –
the 16th Century – from Mannerism to the 18th Century.
Casa natale di Giacomo Puccini (Native home of Giacomo Puccini):
in the Cittadella Square. Established as a museum which
conserves recollections, documents, musical instruments
and portraits of the Puccini family (Giacomo’s father
was a famous local musician).
