ATRI
Hatria, that
like Vasto was founded by
the Illiri in the XI sec. b.C., derives from Hatranus or Hadranus,
illiric divinity.
The city made part of a confederation sided oppose Rome but
later annexed itself to the republic at the beginnig of the
III sec. (289 a.C.) becoming Roman town hall.
Under the Longobards, Atri made part of the Ducato di Spoleto
and in XII century was an important fief of Conti d' Apruzio.
In the wars between Guelfi and Ghibellines sided with the
first and, as consequence of this, in 1251 Pope Innocenzo
IV instituted the Diocese.
In 1395, Atri was sold for 35,000 ducati to the Count of S.
Flaviano Antonio Acquaviva, whose family was become related
with the Aragoneses.
In the 1757 the city went under the dominion of the Reign
of Naples, until the moment in which it entered into the Reign
of Italy.
Artistic jewel of the city is the Cathedral Basilica
of “S. Maria Assunta” in Romanesque-Gothic
style, built up between 1264 and 1305, which keeps a cycle
of frescoes of the regionale artist Andrea De Litio (XV sec.).
Other churches to visit are S.Reparata, S.Agostino, S.Andrea,
S.Giovanni Batiste, S.Francesco, S. Chiara and S.Nicola.
